Barclays Gumtree Admin Job Scam CIFAS Marker Removal

Our client responded to what looked like a genuine administrative job advert on Gumtree. The role was presented as ordinary back-office work, with payment processing framed as part of accounts receivable duties. The use of a mainstream platform, named contacts and contract-style paperwork all made the role appear far more credible than a crude scam.

Once the payments started moving through the Barclays account, however, the case took on the classic appearance of recruitment fraud. Barclays detected the pattern and filed a Misuse of Facility marker. The key issue then became whether the customer had knowingly agreed to participate in fraud, or whether they had simply been recruited through a professional-looking job scam.

The report confirmed a Misuse of Facility marker, regular payment fraud, filed by Barclays Bank UK PLC. In practical terms, it appears to have relied on the suspicious transaction pattern rather than on direct evidence of what the customer understood about the role.

That left a familiar gap. The filing described movement of money through the account, but it did not convincingly address the Gumtree advert, the job documents or the way the role had been presented. Suspicious activity was clear enough. Knowledge and intent were not.

The complaint challenged Barclays on proof and context. We exhibited the Gumtree advert, the fake contract material and the surrounding communications to show why the customer believed they had accepted legitimate work rather than a money-mule role.

That shifted the case away from transaction pattern alone and back onto the question Barclays still had to answer, where was the evidence of dishonesty? UK GDPR accuracy arguments supported the complaint, but the decisive point was that being recruited through a convincing job scam is not the same thing as knowingly misusing an account.

Barclays reviewed the complaint and accepted that the evidence pointed to recruitment fraud rather than to knowing participation by the customer.

The marker was removed within four weeks. For similar readers, the lesson is that mainstream platforms and professional paperwork can still be part of the scam, and a proper complaint needs to show how convincing the setup was at the time the role was accepted.
